 Anne E Owen

The aim of this publication is to describe aspects of the nature and development of learning and leisure activity in Etwall during centuries past and leading up to the present day. It represents a substantial enlargement of research first carried out by Anne Owen for the Victoria County History Project for Derbyshire edited by Philip Riden of the University of Nottingham. Although the story of growth in educational opportunity and social activities reflected events at the national level, provision in a village such as Etwall owed much to the initiatives of local groups and individuals.
Much of the information here presented has been derived by Anne Owen from contemporary writings, newspapers, such the Derby Mercury, and trade directories published from the late eighteenth century.
